Overview
The Machame Route — affectionately known as the Whisky Route — is Mount Kilimanjaro’s most popular, most scenic, and most consistently rewarding climbing route — a breathtaking seven-day journey through five completely different and equally extraordinary ecological zones from the ancient montane rainforest of the lower slopes to the legendary Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — delivering the most dramatic and most visually spectacular summit experience available on Africa’s highest mountain with Serengeti Scent Adventures’ expert certified guides departing from Arusha and Moshi.
Highlights
- Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — the highest point in all of Africa
- Five vegetation zones — rainforest, heathland, moorland, alpine desert & arctic summit
- Lava Tower acclimatization — the famous high-altitude detour significantly boosting summit success rates
- Barranco Wall — one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic and most exciting climbing features
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro’s most celebrated and most widely chosen climbing route — attracting more climbers than any other approach on the mountain and consistently delivering summit experiences of extraordinary beauty, extraordinary personal achievement, and extraordinary lasting significance for every climber who chooses this magnificent trail.
Known as the “Whisky Route” — in playful contrast to the easier “Coca Cola” Marangu Route — the Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest through some of the mountain’s most dramatic, most diverse, and most visually breathtaking terrain.
Distance: 18 km hiking
Altitude: 1,800m → 3,000m
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Machame Camp (3,000m)
Depart your Moshi or Arusha hotel and transfer to the beautiful Machame Gate (1,800m) for park registration and team introductions. Begin your Kilimanjaro adventure ascending through the extraordinary ancient montane rainforest — lush, cool, and deeply atmospheric — with excellent opportunities for black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey, and olive baboon encounters along the forest trail. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m) for dinner and your first overnight on the mountain.
Distance: 5 km hiking
Altitude: 3,000m → 3,840m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Shira Camp (3,840m)
A shorter but steadily ascending day through the extraordinary heathland and moorland zone — leaving the forest behind and entering the open and beautifully dramatic high-altitude heath landscape with the first breathtaking panoramic views of the southern Kilimanjaro ice fields beginning to appear above. Arrive at the beautiful Shira Plateau (3,840m) — one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic and most atmospherically beautiful overnight locations. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.
Distance: 10 km hiking
Altitude: 3,840m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,960m)
The most critical and most effective acclimatization day of the entire Machame Route — ascending high to the dramatic Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch and acclimatization before descending to the beautiful Barranco Camp (3,960m) for the night. This classic “walk high sleep low” acclimatization strategy is the single most important factor in the Machame Route’s consistently high summit success rates — and the dramatic Lava Tower itself — a massive volcanic plug rising dramatically from the moorland — is one of the most visually extraordinary landmarks on the entire mountain. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp with extraordinary southern ice field views.
Distance: 5 km hiking
Altitude: 3,960m → 4,035m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Karanga Camp (4,035m)
The most technically exciting and most physically thrilling day of the entire Machame Route — beginning with the famous Barranco Wall — a dramatic and exhilarating hands-and-feet scramble up a steep and rocky cliff face that provides one of Kilimanjaro’s most exciting and most memorable climbing moments. Despite its dramatic appearance the Wall is not technically difficult and is safely navigated by virtually all climbers with the assistance and encouragement of our expert guides. The views from the top of the Wall — across the entire southern Kilimanjaro landscape — are simply breathtaking. Continue across the beautiful Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp (4,035m) for dinner and overnight.
Distance: 5 km hiking
Altitude: 4,035m → 4,640m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,640m)
A shorter and steadily ascending day through the dramatic alpine desert zone — the vegetation becoming increasingly sparse and the landscape increasingly dramatic as the altitude rises steadily toward the summit zone. Arrive at Barafu Camp (4,640m) — the Machame Route’s high camp and the final overnight stop before the summit push — in the early afternoon. Rest, eat well, and prepare your summit gear carefully before an early dinner at 5:00 PM and an early sleep in preparation for the midnight summit departure. Your guides brief you on the summit night plan, weather conditions, and all safety procedures.
Distance: 17 km hiking
Altitude: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Midnight Summit Push:
Depart Barafu Camp at approximately 12:00 midnight — ascending through the extraordinary arctic summit zone by headlamp in complete darkness through the most challenging and most rewarding hours of the entire climb. The ascent to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim is the most demanding section — steep, cold, and at extreme altitude — but the extraordinary encouragement and expert pacing of your Serengeti Scent Adventures guides carries every climber through this ultimate challenge.
Uhuru Peak:
From Stella Point continue along the breathtaking crater rim to the legendary Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — arriving as the African sun rises in a breathtaking blaze of gold and crimson over the vast East African plains stretching endlessly below — one of the most emotionally overwhelming and most deeply personally significant moments available anywhere on Earth. Photographs at the famous summit sign before beginning the long descent.
Descent:
Descend all the way from Uhuru Peak through Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp (3,100m) — a long but deeply satisfying descent through the mountain’s extraordinary vegetation zones back into the warmth and lushness of the lower slopes. Dinner and a deeply deserved overnight at Mweka Camp.
Distance: 10 km hiking
Altitude: 3,100m → 1,650m
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Overnight: Return to Moshi or Arusha hotel
A final beautiful morning descent through the extraordinary montane rainforest of the lower Kilimanjaro slopes — the lush green forest a deeply welcome and deeply beautiful contrast to the stark and dramatic summit zone of the previous days. Arrive at Mweka Gate (1,650m) for the official presentation of your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate — one of the proudest and most deeply deserved moments of the entire adventure. Transfer back to your Moshi or Arusha hotel for a celebratory shower, celebratory lunch, and the most deeply satisfying rest of your entire Tanzania visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Machame Route earned its playful nickname “The Whisky Route” in contrast to the easier “Coca Cola” Marangu Route — implying that the Machame is the stronger and more demanding of the two most popular routes. The name has stuck and is now widely used by guides, operators, and climbers across the entire Kilimanjaro industry as an affectionate and accurate description of this magnificent route’s more challenging and more rewarding character.
Serengeti Scent Adventures’ Machame Route climbers achieve summit success rates consistently above 85% — significantly higher than the industry average. Our high success rates are the direct result of our expert guides’ acclimatization management, our strict health monitoring at every camp, our conservative pacing philosophy, and our genuine personal investment in every climber’s summit achievement.
The Machame Route requires a good level of general fitness — regular cardiovascular exercise such as running, hiking, or cycling in the months before the climb is strongly recommended. We recommend completing at least 2 to 3 long day hikes of 6 hours or more with a loaded pack before departure. No technical climbing experience is required — the Barranco Wall scramble is the only hands-and-feet section and is safely navigated by virtually all climbers.
January to March and June to October are the absolute best months — clear skies, stable weather, and the best summit conditions. April and May are not recommended due to heavy rainfall and poor trail conditions. November and December are possible but involve some rainfall — contact Serengeti Scent Adventures for specific conditions advice for your planned travel dates.
