Overview
The Marangu Route — affectionately known as the Coca Cola Route — is Mount Kilimanjaro’s oldest, most classic, and most historically significant climbing route — a six-day journey through the mountain’s most beautiful and most accessible southeastern approach delivering the unique and deeply comfortable experience of permanent hut accommodation at every overnight camp — making it the only Kilimanjaro route where climbers sleep in comfortable dormitory huts rather than tents — with Serengeti Scent Adventures’ expert certified guides departing from Arusha and Moshi.
Highlights
- Comfortable hut accommodation — the only Kilimanjaro route with permanent dormitory huts
- Beautiful southeastern forest approach — lush and ancient montane rainforest
- Horombo Huts — one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful and most atmospheric overnight locations
- Colobus & blue monkeys — beautiful primates in the lower forest zone
The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro’s most historic and most iconic climbing route — the oldest established path to the summit and the route that introduced Kilimanjaro climbing to the world. Known affectionately as the “Coca Cola Route” — in playful contrast to the more challenging “Whisky” Machame Route — the Marangu is often described as Kilimanjaro’s most accessible route due to its more gradual gradient, its well-maintained trail, and most distinctively its unique permanent hut accommodation at every overnight camp — a comfort available on no other Kilimanjaro route.

Depart your Moshi or Arusha hotel and transfer to the historic Marangu Gate (1,860m) — the most famous and most visited of all Kilimanjaro’s park entry points. Complete park registration and meet your full Serengeti Scent Adventures mountain team before beginning your ascent through the extraordinary montane rainforest — lush, cool, and filled with the calls of Hartlaub’s turaco, silvery-cheeked hornbill, and an exceptional diversity of forest bird species. Arrive at the beautiful Mandara Huts (2,720m) — a charming cluster of wooden A-frame huts in a beautiful forest clearing — for dinner and your first comfortable overnight on the mountain.
Distance: 12 km hiking
Altitude: 2,720m → 3,720m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720m)
A longer and steadily ascending day leaving the forest behind and entering the beautiful heathland and moorland zone — the landscape opening dramatically into extraordinary panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s southeastern slopes and the vast Tanzanian plains stretching endlessly below. Arrive at the beautiful Horombo Huts (3,720m) — one of the most atmospheric and most beautifully situated overnight locations on the entire mountain — perched dramatically on the open moorland with breathtaking views of both Mawenzi Peak and the distant Kibo summit in every direction. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.
Distance: 6 to 8 km optional hiking
Altitude: 3,720m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720m)
A critically important acclimatization rest day at Horombo Huts — allowing the body essential time to adapt to the altitude before the final push to the high camp. A guided acclimatization hike to the beautiful Zebra Rocks (3,980m) — dramatically striped volcanic rock formations above Horombo — provides excellent altitude exposure following the essential “walk high sleep low” acclimatization principle without the physical cost of a full ascent day. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, eating well, and preparing equipment for the final two days. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.
Distance: 10 km hiking
Altitude: 3,720m → 4,703m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kibo Huts (4,703m)
Depart Horombo Huts and ascend through the increasingly dramatic alpine desert zone — the vegetation disappearing completely as the altitude rises and the landscape becoming the most stark, most dramatic, and most otherworldly of the entire journey. Pass through the famous Saddle — the extraordinary high-altitude desert plateau between the Mawenzi and Kibo volcanic cones — with breathtaking and deeply moving views of both peaks in every direction. Arrive at Kibo Huts (4,703m) — the highest overnight point on the Marangu Route and the final camp before the summit push — for an early dinner at 5:00 PM and an early sleep as your guides brief you carefully on the summit night plan and all safety procedures.
Distance: 20 km hiking
Altitude: 4,703m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720m)
Midnight Summit Push:
Depart Kibo Huts at approximately 12:00 midnight — ascending through the arctic summit zone by headlamp in complete darkness through the most demanding and most rewarding hours of the entire climb. The steep and sustained ascent through volcanic scree to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim tests every climber’s physical and mental reserves — but the expert encouragement and unwavering support of your Serengeti Scent Adventures guides carries every climber through this ultimate challenge.
Uhuru Peak:
From Gilman’s Point continue along the breathtaking crater rim — passing the extraordinary Rebmann Glacier — to the legendary Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — arriving as the African sun rises in an overwhelming blaze of extraordinary color over the vast East African plains stretching endlessly below. Photographs at the famous summit sign and a long and deeply satisfying moment of pure achievement before beginning the long descent.
Descent:
Descend all the way from Uhuru Peak through Kibo Huts to Horombo Huts (3,720m) — a long but deeply satisfying return through the mountain’s extraordinary landscape zones. Dinner and overnight at the beautiful Horombo Huts.
Distance: 20 km hiking
Altitude: 3,720m → 1,860m
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Overnight: Return to Moshi or Arusha hotel
A final beautiful morning descent all the way through the extraordinary heathland, forest, and lower slopes back to the historic Marangu Gate (1,860m) — the most satisfying and most nostalgic descent on any Kilimanjaro route as the landscape transforms from the stark arctic world of the summit zone back through every vegetation zone to the lush and beautiful forest of the gate. Arrive at Marangu Gate for the official and deeply proud presentation of your Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate. Transfer back to your Moshi or Arusha hotel for a celebratory shower, celebratory lunch, and the most deeply deserved rest of your entire Tanzania adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Marangu Route earned its playful nickname “The Coca Cola Route” in contrast to the more demanding “Whisky” Machame Route — implying that the Marangu is the easier and more refreshing of Tanzania’s two most popular Kilimanjaro routes. The name is also a nod to the permanent hut facilities along the route where basic supplies including soft drinks were historically available — a comfort that made the Marangu feel significantly more accessible and more civilized than the camping-based alternatives.
The Marangu Route has a more gradual gradient and a more direct ascent profile than the Machame Route — making the daily hiking less physically demanding. However the 6-day standard duration provides less acclimatization time than the 7-day Machame Route which is why the Marangu’s summit success rate is generally slightly lower. Serengeti Scent Adventures strongly recommends the 6-day Marangu for climbers who prioritize comfort and a more gentle gradient and the 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho for climbers who prioritize the highest possible summit success rates.
The Marangu Route’s permanent huts provide dormitory beds with mattresses and blankets — making a full sleeping bag less essential than on the camping routes. However we strongly recommend bringing a warm sleeping bag liner at minimum and a lightweight sleeping bag for the cold high-altitude nights at Horombo (3,720m) and Kibo (4,703m) Huts.
As Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most historically popular route the Marangu can be busier than some other approaches — particularly during peak climbing seasons. However the route’s unique hut accommodation creates a warm and sociable mountain community atmosphere that many climbers find deeply enjoyable and deeply motivating. Serengeti Scent Adventures manages departure timing and group sizes to maximize every client’s personal summit experience regardless of trail conditions.
